ON TO THE MUSIC.

PURE RNB

Many early R&B artists started in the church, and it kept going. Instruments began to change and through the instruments so did the artist. R&B, in what started out as a social change, is now having a worldwide effect, and it’s not stopping soon. Surprisingly, gospel had a big effect on what R&B was.

What was popular was the call and response that gospel brought out. Several gospel elements were borrowed from R&B roots. It laid the foundation for rhythm and blues. Its emotional elements were also found in the latter. Sam Cooke was one of the early adopters of this change in music.

Soon after his song “You Send Me”, other artists began experimenting with R&B. As music changed in the African American community, so did the world. The Civil Rights Movement was in full swing. This is how R&B came to describe the culture of African Americans.

As gospel changed, it involved changing how things were. Words and instruments became more technical to describe this change. Early adopters such as Muddy Waters, BB King and T-Bone Walker introduced something different, and it was the guitar solo. This became the defining feature of R&B during that time.

Muddy Waters would then help push blues and R&B music through Chess Records, which was located in Chicago. The Golden Age of R&B can be found during this time. R&B was a journey to get where they were at. It had to separate itself from Rock and Roll and Soul music.

In the beginning, R&B was considered ungodly because its origin was the church. It has to go through different stages to find its place. After its challenges with Soul Music, R&B found a new competitor and it was Hip Hop. Younger generations  flooded to this as R&B had to find its audience. Finally, the fight was over and that was the start of the fusion between Hip Hop and R&B. But now there are more singers who follow the classic R&B styles. The 90s is where R&B found its way, unlike the era before. 90s R&B. The biggest hits included "One Sweet Day", "No Scrubs", "I Will Always Love You", and "Un-Break My Heart". R&B sounds dominated throughout this era and on the charts it was evident that people enjoyed this type of music. Now there are many popular R&B artists, such as The Weeknd, Samm Hennshaw and GIVEON.
